Langford & John

During the early years of Langford, John worked tirelessly and demonstrated great leadership to bring a vision to the City and move the area forward as it was incorporated. Serving on Langford’s first ever City Council, John was relied upon by the community to guide Langford from an electoral area to a full municipality with services, businesses, homes, and recreational opportunities.

Described as an advocate for the community, John volunteered for numerous internal and external Committees throughout his tenure as a Councillor. By representing Langford at the Committee level, John was able to show the Region that Langford was dedicated to establishing the community as a place for all to live, work, and play. John shared the vision for the City throughout the Region through his volunteerism efforts. His dedication inspired community members to give back to the community and contribute their time and energy for the betterment of Langford. Even after his time as a Councillor ended, John continued to put his name forward and be involved with the City’s Planning and Zoning Committee and the Administration and Finance Committee.

John’s diverse professional experience made him an asset to the community when it came to development and planning for the future. From business experience to trade experience, John offered everything he knew to the City. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting John, staff remember him as a kind person whose experience and voice were always respected at the Council table and within the community.

The City expresses its sincere condolences to the Crook Family and will always remember John and the value he brought to our community. Link to City of Langford Message from the Mayor.

John's Passing

It is with heavy heart we remember John Crook, father, husband and business owner. He passed away peacefully in Duncan, BC on May 4, 2024, with his beloved family by his side. He was the owner of his much loved business, Swiftsure Electric LTD. and after a lengthly battle with health, he is now at peace. He leaves behind a son, and two daughters who will try to live in his memory. God speed dad. See you someday... hopefully not too soon. As such, this concludes everything swiftsure and will now serve as a memorial.

From John's LinkedIn

John was born in Winnipeg, he and his family moved to Victoria in 1965. There, he soon became involved with cars and other machinery. He repaired and painted cars through high school and college. Although starting in engineering, an Associate Degree in Business Administration was completed in 1975.

Along the way were a summer surveying for the forest service, a stint as a supervisor for Home Oil and Esso in Vancouver, steel scrap yard worker, and maintenance at BC Forest Products. In 1976, he started as an Electrician, starting his own business in 1981 and forming Swiftsure Electric Ltd in 1989.

Since starting, he had done everything from a new hotel (Ramada Inn) to streetlighting with up to 14 employees.

He was an excellent troubleshooter, there's not much that he hadn't seen or worked on, and found solutions for. His approach to problem solving probably helped him in achieving 7 years on Langford Council, mostly as Chair of Planning and Zoning, and as President of the Municipal Association.
